RFID Tutorial

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a new technology with tremendous application potential in almost all aspects of daily life. Today, RFID enjoys solid and growing adoption in fields such as supply chain management, logistics, keyless entry, and industrial process management, but the true promise of this technology is still untapped, due to the numerous technical challenges which still lie ahead. In this tutorial we address the key challenges facing the development of next generation RFID system, such as antenna and analog frontend design, exploration of system parameters in real world scenarios, and security and privacy issues.

The first international EURASIP workshop on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology provided a premium forum for presentation of the most recent research in this new wireless communication technology, spanning the entire scope from an individual tag to entire systems based on RFIDs. This workshop has been chaired by the head of the laboratory Prof. Markus Rupp, Holger Arthaber, and Pavle Belanovic.

Naeem Zafar finished his dissertation about a power optimisation framework for embedded systems. In his thesis an iterative compilation scheme is developed, which optimises C source code regarding power consumption, for a given hardware architecture.

Evaluation

On the 23rd of May 2007 the Christian Doppler Laboratory has been evaluated by the Christian Doppler Society together with the external reviewer Marc Moonen from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. The evaluation has been successfully passed, thus allowing for continuing the research activities until the mid of 2009.

Georg Brandmayr has won the GIT (Gesellschaft für Informationstechnik) award of the Austrian Electrotechnical Association for his diploma thesis entitled Automated Rapid Prototyping Environment for Field Programmable Gate Arrays. The award ceremony took place at the general assembly of the Austrian Electrotechnical Association on the 25th of April 2006.

RFID

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is an automatic identification method, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags or transponders. The laboratory focusses within its cooperation with Infineon Technologies on the developmnet of those tags. The Radio Frequency Engineering group supports this project with the antenna design.

Pavle Belanovic finished his dissertation about the design of embedded systems with the open tool integration environment (OTIE). In his work he presents a consistent design methodology for the design of embedded systems, the automatic generation of virtual prototypes, and the automatic conversion of floating-point to fixed-point representations.

Mit nunmehr 30 Laboratorien ist die Christian-Doppler-Forschunggesellschaft ihrem Ziel aus dem Jahre 2001, nämlich der Verdoppelung auf 40 Labors, wieder einen Schritt näher gerückt. Vergangenen Freitag hat das Kuratorium die Gründung von 4 neuen Christian-Doppler-Laboratorien genehmigt, die wir Ihnen nachstehend kurz vorstellen möchten:
Unter der Leitung von Prof.Ronald Blab wurde das CD-Labor für gebrauchsverhaltensorientierte Prüfung von bituminösen Baustoffen am Institut für Strassenbau der TU-Wien eingerichtet. Industriepartner sind die Nievelt Labor GmbH, Alpine Mayreder Bau GmbH, Teerag-Asdag AG sowie Swietelsky Bauges.m.b.H.
Am Institut für Metallphysik wird sich Dr.Reinhard Pippan gemeinsam mit der Böhler Uddeholm AG sowie der voestalpine Schienen GmbH dem Forschungsbereich Lokale Analyse von Verformung und Bruch widmen.
Mit Dr.Guido Grundmeier, der am Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung in Düsseldorf das CD-Labor für Polymer/Metallgrenzflächen leiten wird und Henkel Austria sowie voestalpine AG als industrielle Partner hat, wurde nun das zweite CD-Labor in Deutschland gegründet.
Prof.Markus Rupp als wissenschaftlicher Leiter des CD-Pilotlabors Design Methodology of Signal Processing Algorithms wird in Kooperation mit Infineon Technologies am Institut für Nachrichten- und Hochfrequenztechnik seinen Forschungen nachgehen.
